I do volunteer lookups for a few sites and contribute my transcribed documents to USGenWeb archives for the same reason: to help keep the flow of genealogical information as open and free as possible, and to "pay it forward."

Copying and pasting text from a website or a book - i.e., the fruits of someone else's labor - without acknowledging the source is not only dishonest, it fosters resentment. And that, ultimately, stifles the free sharing of information necessary to keep genealogy research vital.
