Children with John Caleb Sutton:
John "Caley" was said to disappear for long periods of time, only to suddenly reappear for a spell, sire another child with Lula, then leave again. My grandfather, French, told my mother that Caley's and Lula's last child together was born and died during one of Caley's absences; the baby apparently got old enough to run through the sheets as they hung from the clothesline, and leave small, muddy handprints on them. When Caley next returned to the family farm, French said, he told his father not to even dismount from his horse. French and his brothers went to their father's funeral in Florida. When some of French's uncles suggested Caley be buried next to Lula, French nixed the idea, saying that since he hadn't lain by her in life, he shouldn't lie by her in death. |
